The Devil’s Child
With a witches streak in her long red hair,
She went her own way and she didn’t care
The family always said she was the Devil’s child
She was the black sheep of the family
But no-one would explain to me
Why it was they said she was the Devil’s Child.
I knew she’d caused a scandal when she sold her hair for gin
She had her husband thrown in jail, when she’d had a fight with him
And it was long ago and those times were tough
But I didn’t see that it was enough
For everyone to say she was the Devil’s child.
Always called her Wicked Auntie Lou,
The years passed and her legend grew
And still I wondered why they said she was the Devil’s child
Years after she was dead, my mother spoke up and she said,
“It’s time to tell you how we knew she was the Devil’s child.
Auntie Louie loved to dance, and used to stay out late,
Coming home alone through woods and fields was really tempting fate
But she knew no-one would bother her
There was a big black dog that followed her
That’s what you get when you’re the Devil’s child.
Her father stood at the cottage gate
Another night when she’d come home late
And along the lonely lane there came the Devil’s child
Black as night with fiery eyes,
Twice the normal size
Behind her was demon hound of the Devil’s child
I heard that this would happen year after year
And as she came in through the door the dog would disappear
She lived a wild and wayward life
And family stories still survive
Of wicked Auntie Louie, who was the Devil’s Child.
She was the Devil’s Child.
